Printed Matter, Inc., the New York-based non-profit organization committed to the dissemination and appreciation of publications made by artists, will host a Benefit Auction and Selling Exhibition at the Rauschenberg Foundation Project Space to help mitigate damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.
During the storm, Printed Matter experienced severe basement flooding resulting in the loss of 9,000 books, as well as significant damage to their 36-year-old archive. Proceeds from the Benefit will support their recovery as well as aid the organization in its capacity-building effort to establish a more durable foundation for its services into the future.
The Sandy Relief Benefit Auction has three basic components: a selling exhibition of rare publications and other donated works; an online, silent auction of artworks on display at the venue; and a live auction of selected works that will close the Benefit on March 9.
A special preview and reception will be held February 28th, 6-8pm, to mark the unveiling of all 120 works and to thank the participating artists and donors. The opening will feature a solo performance by cellist Julia Kent (Antony and the Johnsons and ex-Rasputina), followed by a shared DJ set from Lizzi Bougatsos (Gang Gang Dance) & Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio). The event is free and open to the public.
All works will then be available for viewing at the Rauschenberg Project Space March 1–9, 11–7pm. A majority of the works will be available for bidding during this time. Bids can be made online or at the venue. All Selling Exhibition works may be viewed and purchased at the venue during this period as well.
The Live Auction will take place March 9, 6–8:30pm with approximately 20 selected works to be auctioned. Bidding will commence at 7pm sharp, while final bids and offers on all other works can also be made. The evening will feature a performance by Alex Waterman on solo cello with electronics. Tickets may be pre-purchased here.
In addition to auction works, a vitrine-based exhibition of rare books, artworks and ephemera are available for viewing and purchase. This material includes some truly remarkable items from the personal collection of Robert Rauschenberg, donated by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in memory of the late Printed Matter Board Member John McWhinnie. Among the works available are books and artworks from Marcel Duchamp, Willem de Kooning, Alfred Steiglitz, Joseph Beuys, Brigid Berlin (Polk), as well as a Claes Oldenburg sculpture, a rare William S. Burroughs manuscript, and the Anthology Film Archive Portfolio (1982). Additional vintage artists’ books have been generously donated by the Sol LeWitt Estate. Works include pristine copies of Autobiography (1980), Four Basic Kinds of Straight Lines(1969), Incomplete Open Cubes (1974), and others. Three Star Books have kindly donated a deluxe set of their Maurizio Cattelan book edition.
Includes works by:

Henrik Purienne : “What do you say to them that’s so fucking funny?”
07/03/13 - 24/03/13
Currently based in Cape Town South Africa, fashion photographer and documentary filmmaker Henrik Purienne already has an impressive client list including American Apparel, Stussy and Adidas. In 2009 he launched the annual fashion magazine ‘Mirage’, a 400+page vision of fashion, swimwear, and jetset hedonism.
An interviewer once asked, “What is an average day like for Henrik Purienne?” His reply; “I wouldn’t know, I’ve never had an average day.”
Create are pleased to present his first UK exhibition, accompanied by Create Publishing’s launch of the accompanying zine, documenting the ‘before and after shots’ taken from his fashion shoots.
“While editing my book, I realised every spool has one or 2 shots of girls cracking up at jokes between posing”, my ex-girlfriend use to ask me, “What do you say to them that’s so fucking funny?”
The exhibition’s opening night & zine release will be held at Space@Create on Thursday 7th of March, and the exhibition will run until the 24th March.
